| This
community project started on May 10,1997 where individualized service is
provided at the bedside through the book trolley service or mobile library.
It was a collaboration project between PUSPANITA HKL and HKL Medical
Library. The Patients' Library was officially launched by the Hon. Datin
Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail in June 26, 1998. In May 2000 the Patients' Library
was handed over to PUSPANITA HKL.

THE
MISSION
"Endeavor to provide recreational reading materials to
patients for their recreation, education, mind development and therapy."
OBJECTIVES
- helping patients
to reduce the boredom and fatigue of hospitalization.
- promote reading habits
among patients.
- instill social responsibility
and caring culture among youth and communities.
- contribute
towards the building of civil society and a reading society.
VOLUNTEERS
& SERVICES
The
Patients' Library Committee is responsible for the building-up
of the collection and recruiting volunteers to render the services. There
are two categories of patients' library volunteers.They are the "Rakan Kesihatan"
(secondary school pupils) and "Sahabat Kesihatan" (adults).
They serve both the Patients' Library and the Mobile Service. Currently,
the Patients' Library provides service to 25 wards at the main building,
while the Mobile Library caters for all Orthopaedics ward 1, 2, 4, 5,
6, 7 and Haematology ward 19.

COLLECTION
The
Library houses a collection of more than 6 000 reading materials in the
form of books (fiction and non-fiction), popular magazines, newsletters,
health brochures, etc. The collection is completely obtained from donations
made by individuals and organisations.
- DONATIONS
The Patients' Library received
donations of books and magazines from Dr Lim Kuan Joo, Dato' Dr Hj.
Ahmad Tajuddin Jaafar (the former directors) HKL staff and patients,
National Library of Malaysia, French Embassy, Yayasan Salam Malaysia,
Karangkraf Sdn Bhd, Pustaka Wira, Utusan Melayu Sdn Bhd, Kelab Wanita
Fakulti UKM, NCWO, PKPIM, Rotary Club Kampong Baharu and individuals
from all walks of life. The French Embassy for the second time has donated
books including audiocassette to the library on Oct. 13, 1999. In December
1999 donations came from ABIM.

- The library also received
in kind such as book trollies, money (for volunteers' overall), posters,
plaque, carpet and painting for renovation work. The committee are thankful
to Datin Saadiah Ahmad, PUSPANITA of the Ministry of Health, Datin Dr
Suraiya Tun Hussein, Radicare (M) Sdn. Bhd HKL Branch and Sharikat Bina
Terbit for those contributions.

proud and immensely grateful to those caring people for their donations
and hope to receive continuous support from them. We also hope that
there will be more caring society coming forward to help us in this
project.
