INTRODUCTION
Surgery is one of the basic services provided by the hospital since the beginning and before the 60's it includes Urology, Neurosurgery and Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. The first Malaysian general surgeon to head the department was Dato 'Dr. Syed Mohammad Alhady
BACKGROUND
Surgery is one of the basic services offered by hospitals since the early years before the 60s. It combines Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. In the early 1980s a new department of heart surgery was established which was a pioneer of the National Heart Institute. Pediatric Surgery became a separate unit in the 70s and is now housed separately at the Institute of Pediatrics. Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery has been transferred to Selayang Hospital since September 2000.
Breast & Endocrine Surgery Services was expanded to PutraJaya Hospital in mid-2002. From 2000 the services offered by this department are limited to Sub Specialties such as Vascular Surgical Services, Breast & Endocrine Surgery General and colorectal General Services. Now, the Department of General Surgery has provided sub-specialist surgical services such as General Surgery, Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, Breast & Endocrine Surgery, Colorectal, Baritric
VISION
The HKL General Surgery Department will be a center of excellence in health, education and research in the field of surgery through a team that provides services to clients.
MISSION
1. Expand services to high level care and make full use of expertise and resources for that purpose as well as continue to develop and advance surgical services especially in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, Breast & Endocrine Surgery. Develop sub-specialist training programs for Specialists, Medical Officers and Paramedics in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery as well as Breast & Endocrine Surgery.
2. Conduct training programs for all categories of officers, especially Medical Officers and Postgraduate Medical Officers (Master of Medical Training Program) and officers who are in the pre-registration program.
3. Introduce new projects continuously for the improvement of Kuala Lumpur Hospital as a higher education reference center in the form of Quality Assurance, International Organization Standard Activities and clinical research projects.
4. Establish close relationships with centers of excellence in specific areas for mutual benefit to encourage the exchange of ideas and cooperation in the field of development or treatment procedures.
OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVE
1. Provide high quality diagnostic and treatment services in general surgery, colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and breast & endocrine surgery.
2. To develop and advance higher education services especially in vascular, breast and endocrine surgery. Implement training programs for all categories of staff, especially for medical officers in postgraduate training (Master Training Program) and home officers in pre-registration programs.
3. To develop subspecialization training programs for surgeons in vascular surgery, colorectal surgery, thoracic surgery as well as breast and endocrine surgery.
4. To implement a project that will enhance the image of Kuala Lumpur Hospital as a tertiary reference center. This includes quality assurance activities and clinical research projects.

1. To be a national reference center and a center of excellence in surgical treatment.

LIST OF SERVICE
Outpatient
Attending to new and referred cases, examining, investigating and making appointments for surgery. Reviewing cases attended to previously, either in the clinic or in the ward including operated cases.
Inpatient
Attending to cases admitted as surgical emergencies or those scheduled for operations electively. Close observations, review and management of in-ward cases. Ill patients are seen as often as necessary. Performing simple procedures in the ward.
Operation
Operative procedures are performed in operation theaters with anesthetists and the operative team.
Minimal Access Surgery
Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) is provided by vascular team for patient with hyperhidrosis.
Endovascular procedure
Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endovascular procedures in Angio suit with radiologists & anaesthetists.
Vascular laboratory
Provides non-invasive diagnostic procedures for vascular diseases.
Endoscopy
Upper and lower GI endoscopies are performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, sharing the same facilities with the physicians on the remaining days. Endoscopic procedures requiring imaging are done in the radiology department on Thursdays.
Wound care
The wound care unit servesas a referral unit primarily for patients under the care of Department of General Surgery working together with other health care personnel in the department both in-patient and out-patient.
Breast and endocrine
This unit will be a ‘one stop center’ for breast cancer patients and family members in terms of emotional and physical care. Patients and family members will be given relevant initial exposure before and after surgery. Help patients get breast prosthesis after surgery and interact with active NGO groups such as BCWA, AMANITA, and MAKNA.
Stoma
STOMA CARE is a local reference center for stoma treatment services for all wards in the General Surgery Department as well as the Department within the Kuala Lumpur Hospial on the instructions of the Specialist and Medical Officer in Charge. In addition, the stoma unit also deals with stoma cases that have complications that cannot be handled by other nurses for patients in wards and clinics and works with the Wound care team to deal with stoma cases that have complications on surgical wounds.
Infection control link nurse
Infection control activities are practiced throughout the duty in compliance with the Policies and Procedures on Infection Control Ministry of Health Malaysia, (2010) 2nd Edition including a list of activities practiced at the General Surgery Clinic to ensure a safe environment for staff and patients and free from cross infections.
C.M.E.
1. Academic activities are held for the benefit of our House Officers, Medical Officers, Surgical Postgraduates and Vascular Surgical Trainees.
2. On the first Tuesday of the month at 1.00pm to 2.00pm the Gastroenterological conference, with occasional invited speakers present and discuss cases.
3. On Wednesday afternoons between 1.00pm to 2.00pm journal readings are held usually after an education video viewing with lunch.
4. Fortnightly on Wednesdays 2.30pm to 3.30pm the combined Breast and Oncological case discussions are held in SOPD.
5. At 4.00pm to 5.30pm every Wednesdays the Surgical Department has her continuing medical education in surgical topics and journal club.
6. On Thursday mornings from 7.45am to 8.30am the weekly radiological conference are held.
7. At 11.30am - 12.30pm, topics relevant to House Officers' surgical exposure are discussed with Clinical Specialists.
8. Breast cancer counselling sessions are held in the SOPD every Thursday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm
9. On the first Friday of the month, combined surgical-pathological conference are held from 7.45am to 9.00am
10. The department has her Mortality and Morbidity Conference on every second Wednesday of the month from 3.00pm to 4.00pm
