INTRODUCTION

Department of Paediatric Surgery was formed in 1990 and it has grown to offer all types of surgery to neonates, children and adolescent with the exception of cardiac and neurosurgery. 

 

LOCATION

The Department office comprising the administrative as well as the surgeon's room are located on the second floor of Institute Paediatric. 

Ward KK4 - located on the second floor with a total of 38 beds.

Ward KK7 - located on the third floor with a total of 24 beds.

Ward KK8 - step down ward for neonates from KK9 before discharge.

Ward KK9 - the neonatal surgical ICU has facilities to ventilate at least 7 neonates.

All the beds above are deemed third class beds. 

 

The surgical out-patient clinics are located on the second floor of Institute Paediatric. This facility is shared with the Paediatric Orthopaedic Unit. 

 

The Surgical Day Care Ward is located in the Day Care Unit, which is on the second floor of Institute Paediatric. 

 

VISION 

To ensure the specialized services of paediatric surgery is received by as many patient as possible throughout Malaysia.

To educate as many medical practioner as possible who are trustworthy, competent and hardworking.

To become an International Referral Centre for Paediatric Surgery.

 

MISSION 

To ensure all surgical patients to be in an optimum condition preoperatively, undergo a safe surgery and receive a complete and systematic follow-up treatment.

To educate patients, their parents and hospital staffs via continuous medical education in wards and clinics.

ROLE/SERVICES
The department acts as a secondary and tertiary referral center for children below 13 years old requiring surgical services. Besides out patient and inpatient care, the department receives referral from all over Malaysia for care of children requiring specialised surgery and postoperative care. 

The department practices the concept of daycare surgery wherever possible. Presently, the subspecialties available in the department include:

Hepatobiliary Surgery

Urology

Colorectal Surgery

Oncology

Thoracic Surgery.

It is hoped that in future, the department would offer liver transplant services.

 

 

 

RESEARCH AND TRAINING

The department is committed to train a minimum of 1 paediatric surgical trainee per year. The department is also serious about improving the training and knowledge of the medical officers and widening their basic knowledge in surgery and medicine.
