i) INTRODUCTION
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty focusing on diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.
ii) BACKGROUND
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department was officially formed in 1961. Since then, the department has extended with formation of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, Special Needs Dentistry and Forensic Odontology Units.
The department is undertaken by our Head of Department and our staffs include consultant/oral surgeons, dental officers, dental technicians, dental surgery assistants, dental nurses and attendants.
iii)VISION
To provide a good and conducive working environment which is sensitive to the needs of the patients by producing a high quality service with the aid of the latest technologies in the management of all patients.
iv) MISSION
To be the establishment referral center of choice for all oral and maxillofacial surgeries.
v) OBJECTIVE & FUNCTION
To provide holistic and comprehensive care which includes diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to all patients with oro-facial and dental problems with the objective of successfully restoring the function ,aesthetics and also elevating the quality of life through the orally fit concept.
The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department is proud to be part of Hospital Kuala Lumpur, the largest hospital in this region which also serves as a tertiary health care provider .We serve the Klang Valley and its littoral communities.
vi) CLIENT CHARTER
CLIENT CHARTER
We promise to provide professional, safe, friendly, caring & quality service.
We will give priority to patients referred from the Accident and Emergency Department in the matter of registration and treatment.
Patients will be given appropriate information on procedures ,treatment and payment by a specialist or Dental Officer.
Patients who need medication for dental problems will be given a prescription for medication that needs to be taken at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital Pharmacy.
Confidentiality of personal information, illness and treatment provided to patients is guaranteed.
Clean, comfortable and safe facilities and environment are provided.
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY
Provide required documents such as identity card, doctor’s reference letter, departmental Guarantee Letter (government employees).
Provide the necessary information accurately such as home address, telephone number and so on.
Understand that treatment priority will be given to patients who are in an emergency.
vii) ORGANIZATION CHART

The outpatient of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery unit are seen and managed in Specialist Complex Ambulatory Care Centre while the inpatient and the three other units services are available in the Satellite Clinic in the main block.
There is a full complement of consultant/oral surgeons, dental officers, dental technicians, dental surgery assistants, dental nurses and attendants. We also have a receptionist coordinating the counter services. Day to day business management is undertaken by our Head of Department whereas our specialists and senior dental officer takes charge of general clinical management.
Our treatment area of both clinics includes dental units for officers and specialists.Both clinic also has its own central sterilization room and supply room and also x-ray room. Our clinic setting is a unique combination of newly refurbished rooms that functions together seamlessly, promoting smooth flow of operations.

ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY DEPARTMENT
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department operated in 2 clinics:
- Level 2 in Specialist Complex Ambulatory Care Centre (SCACC)
- Outpatient refrerral and treatment
Satellite Clinic in main block level 1
Inpatient referral and treatment
Outpatient referral and treatment for Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, Special Needs Dentistry and Forensic Odontology
Our department provides a wide range of services, encompassing most facets of the Oral & Maxillofacial specialty. They include:
1. Trauma involving oral and maxillofacial region
2. Minor oral surgery such as surgical removal of impacted wisdom tooth, dental implant and other minor surgeries.
3. Management of oral and maxillofacial lesion including cancer and temporomandibular joint disorder.
4. Management of dentoalveolar/dentofacial deformity and orthognathic surgery.
5. Conservative treatment
Basic conservative dental treatment is rendered depending on individual needs especially to patients with medical problems complicating oral rehabilitation. Patients requiring more extensive treatment will be referred to satellite dental clinics within Kuala Lumpur.
6. Construction of Oral and Maxillofacial Prostheses
Besides the provision of dentures and splints, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department is
responsible for the fabrication and provision of maxillofacial prostheses referred from various disciplines such as Opthal, ENT, O&G and Plastic & Reconstructive. These prostheses include maxillary obturators, eye and ear prostheses.

7. Special Needs Dentistry
Also known as Special Care Dentistry is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the oral health of people who have intellectual disability or are affected by other medical, physical disabilities or psychiatric issues.
8. Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology Clinic
This is organized with visiting Oral Pathologists from the Institute of Medical Research (IMR)
twice a week for all Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology cases. Cases discussed range from oral ulcers, facial pain to oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
9. Forensic Odontology
Forensic Odontology is the proper handling, examination and evaluation of dental evidence which will then be medicolegal cases presented. The evidence that may derived from teeth is the age & identification of the person to whom the teeth belong to.
10. Combined Clinics
Oral surgery cases that require combined management with other disciplines before commencement of treatment.

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department participates in the Hospital Kuala Lumpur Wednesday clinical meetings. Every Monday evening from 2.00pm till 4.00pm,there will be pre-op discussion held in level 2 Seminar Room, SCACC attended by oral surgeons and dental officers of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department.
