Our deparment provide two main services, consist of in patient and out patient. For in patient, it covered the provision of normal and therapeutic diet and clinical dietetics care to the patients. For outpatient, our service includes nutrition counseling for both individual and group.

There are two kitchens, one located in the main block of the hospital and the other at the Paediatric Institute. The main block kitchen provide diets for all wards in HKL except for Paediatric Institute and Maternity Hospital. Our service also provide diet to IPR. Paediatric Institute and Maternity Hospital catering diet will be provided by Paediatrics kitchen.

VISION
The Department of Dietetic and Food Services will be a center of excellence in the provision of clinical dietetic service, hospital food service and activities to increase the quality of cutomer-centric services profesionally.

MISSION
The Department of Dietetic and Food Services will strive to provide accurate, efficient and the high quality dietetic and food services using the current technological advancement.

AIMS
  1. To provide the appropriate normal and therapeutic diet for in-patients as an integral of the total patient care.
  2. To assess the nutritional requirements of the patient based on the clinical diagnosis, prescribe the appropriate diet regime, whether oral or enteral and provide the dietary advice.  
  3. To provide meals for doctors-on-call and night ration for staff on night duty.

OBJECTIVE

Dietetic
To provide medical nutrition therapy services by applying the nutrition care process and advocate health promotion to improve the nutrition status of patients.

Food Services
To serve the right food to the right patients in order to improve their nutrition status according to their needs and complements their overall medical treatment as well as maintaning customer satisfaction.

A. Clinical Dietetic Service

Clinical dietetics services provided for in- and out-patients based on doctor's referral.

A dietitian works as part of HKL multidisciplinary team to provide and evidence-based nutritional care to inpatients in accordance with hospital policies. Dietitians provide dietetic counselling and nutritional intervention to prevent risk of diet related diseases and promote health through healthy eating habits as part of medical treatment.

For inpatient, it covered the provision of :

• Diet consultation service (based on medical diagnosis or current medical issue)
• Enteral Nutrition Support
• Nutrition education for both individual and group

The dietetic service offer expert nutritional advice on the following specialities:

• Children with special needs
• Inborn error metabolism
• Oncology
• Critical Care (Adult, pediatric and neonate)
• Diabetes
• Geriatric
• Gastrointestinal disorders
• Gynaecological disorders (PCOS)
• Infectious disease (HIV/AIDS)
• Hyperlipidaemia (high blood fats)
• Heart disease and high blood pressure
• Surgical
• Burn
• Nephrology and transplant
• Malnutrition
• Neurological disorders (stroke, MND etc.)
• Pre/post operation dietetics
• Weight management

For outpatient, our service includes nutrition education for both individual and group.

• Response time for all cases is within 24 hours of working days

Dietitians also involved in community services, conduct talks, workshops and seminars to meet the requirements of different individuals or companies.

Our dietetic clinical services are usually provided to patients who are referred by medical doctor. To make a direct appointment, you will require a referral letter from either a GP or Polyclinic doctor.

D. Food Service

Catering service mainly serve for in-patients only. Our department serves a large number of normal diet and therapeutic to in-patient. Food will be served base on ward diet order, regulation and patient's entitlement. Food also provide for all new admission if diet order receive before 6.15 p.m. Diet for Doctor On-Call and night ration also provide base on their entitlement. We also supply and pack enteral formula for those patients who need, as an oral supplement or for tube feeding.
